DNA synthesis in Langerhans islets treated by Pelargonium radula (Cav.) L'Herit. extracts with hypoglycaemic efficacy

Three extracts from Pelargonium radula (Cav.) L'Herit. leaves were prepared by water maceration, by the Soxhlet with 96% ethanol extraction and by residue after hydrodistillation of essential oils. All of them were filtered and lyophilised at -40 oC. Their hypoglycaemic effect was checked on alloxan diabetic CBA/H Zgr mice by blood glucose level determination before (zero-sample) and 15, 45 and 75 minutes after per os treatment with two various doses (30 or 150 mg/kg b.m.) of each extract. L.i. were isolated from the pancreas of healthy adult rats by the collagenase method. The high stimulation of DNA synthesis in the cells of isolated Langerhans islets was observed after their in vitro incubation with Pelargonium radula extracts.
