AIRPORT MANOEUVRING AREA REDESIGN IN RESPECT OF MODERN TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS
The manoeuvring areas of the most airport built up to the 60s were planned for the types of aircraft of that time. The introduction of turbojets with longer take off runway length showed that manoeuvring areas were not satisfactory, especially taxiways. The numbers, locations and types of taxiways did not meet the traffic requirements. Low level of traffic, a few ten thousands annually and up to thirty aircraft operations an hour at Croatian airports have not resulted in improvement of taxiways. It is necessary to plan redesign of manoeuvring areas to satisfy the requirements of modern aircraft and increase in the manoeuvring areas capacities. The examples of Split Airport as well as other airports in Croatia is analysed and the possible and necessary improvements of taxiway systems defined.
