Lower Drava Monitoring
Lower Drava, a section of the Drava river running downstream from the mouth of Mura, is a typical lowland river characterized by a moderate pluvio-glacial regime. lts channel cuts into the alluvial valley and it is being subjected to constant changes of form. Lower Drava is a factor of social progress as well. lt is of multiple significance: it is used to both households and industry. It is essential for advanced farming, fishing, recreation and tourism, it is a potential source of energy, a recipient of waste waters and a waterway, but also an oasis of rare plant and animal species. An international cooperation in water management between Hungary and Croatia has also been established, because Lower Drava is a part of their common border. On that part of the river four shared multipurpose projects were planned, aimed at forming water stairs. Hungary is lately abandoning those projects, and Croatia is adjusting them for a possible realization. Whatever the future prospects of Lower Drava, its ongoing monitoring should be continued in order to comprehend the features of rhe river as a permanent natural phenomenon. There is a long tradition in monitoring the water level (temperature. occurence of ice) on numerous locations. Since i97l the quality of river water is being constantly registered. Sediment transport, was also measured sporadically. Consumption curves are regularly defined, based on periodical dischargc measurements. Analysing data collected by periodically measuring the transport of suspended and bed load, corelations have been established with the discharge. After the publication of the last Hydrographic Atlas in 1972, intermittent surveys of small parts of the river channel and some hydrometric profiles have been conducted. Existing data on Lower Drava have been used for different purposes. Morphological changes of one certain part or the river channel have been modeled, the impact of Osijek's waste waters on the quality of downstream river water has been predicted etc. In those proceedings existing dala have been declared uncomplete and inadequate for quality modeling and simutation. Therefore, a need for completing and improoving present monitoring has arisen as a conclusion.
