Oral health status and prostodontic tratment needs of elderly population in Croatia

The aim of the study was to evaluate the oral health status and needs for prosthodontics treatment of elderly Croatian population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 364 elderly subjects (residential home 200 and free-living 164) were studied: 104 males and 260 females. They were divided into four age groups: 1/55 - 64 years, 2/65 - 74 years, 3/75 - 84 years and 4/> 85 years. The following variables were examined: general health status, oral health behavior, malocclusion, periodontal status, denture wearing, denture wearing time, need for denture, TMJ assessment and denture hyegene. RESULTS: General health status in most subjects (69.5%) was assessed good. The majority of subjects (94.5%) wanted treatment. Periodontal status was evaluated with respect to sextants, whether they were: healthy, bleeding, calculus, with shallow or deep pockets and how many them were excluded. The average number of sextants was excluded (4.6 sextants per subject), independently on sex and age. Denture wearing was found to be dependent upon and increasing with age: 28% of study subjects did not wear denture, 22.3% wore partial upper denture, 25.8% wore partial lower, 13.5% partial upper and lower, 44.5% wore full upper, 33% full lower denture and 18.8% full upper and lower denture. There was no need for prosthodontic treatment in 26.6% of the total number of subjects, and among all others: about 30% needed full dentures, 25% partial dentures. CONCLUSION:Overall, it could be concluded that 4.6 sextants were excluded in the total, which points to 27 extracted teeth per subject. This confirms their dentition status, since on average 12 teeth were missing, and 15 teeth were replaced.
