Partial Buffer Sharing Scheme: Allowable Maximum Load Calculation

Buffer overflow can be avoided by using the finite buffer and by applying a partial buffer sharing scheme for ATM switch overload control. This scheme is an efficient space priority scheme for the congestion control of the traffic with multiple cell loss priority. It is particularly interesting to determine maximum load in such a way that the given constraints of loss probabilities of all classes are not violated. The paper presents an algorithm for searching allowable maximum load for finite buffer capacity. It also presents analytical simulation results of a four-priority buffer system controlled by partial buffer sharing scheme (PBS). Dependence of allowable maximum load upon buffer capacity for four relevant parameters is analyzed.
