Productivity of edible mycorrhizal fungi in Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) stands in Istria, Croatia – preliminary results

Fungi are among the most valuable NWFP as source of income but they also present a very popular recreational activity. Epigeous fruit bodies of edible mycorrhizal fungi were surveyed in Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) stands in Istria which is the first research of this type done in Croatia. Fruit bodies were collected from three permanent mycorrhizal fungi research plots of 400 m2 each, for two consecutive years (2011/2012). Collected material represents nine different genera and 17 taxa with a total of 512 fruit bodies. Genus Suillus Gray was presented with highest number of taxa (5), while Cantharellus lutescens (Pers.) Fr. was the most abundant species. Suillus granulatus (L.) Roussel had the highest fresh and dry biomass and was the only species that occurred in both years at all plots showing the longest fruiting period at the same time (weeks 32 to 50). Productivity was correlated with precipitation in the investigated period. Long term study is needed to create a useful and reliable fungi database for forest managers, stakeholders and policy makers in Croatia.
