Gas-solid interconversion of metaloorganic salts and coordination compounds of copper(II) with aromatic amines

Planned synthesis of molecular crystalline materials with a specific structure and therefore properties is the longstanding goal of crystal engineering. In the last few decades solvent-free methods, such as mechanochemical synthesis [1], have shown great potential for the efficient preparation of a wide range of new materials. Recently, it has been shown that molecules can enter nonporous crystals directly from the gas or vapor phase [2][3]. In a small number of cases such solid-gas interaction is accompanied by a chemical reaction and thereby provides another solvent-free method for synthesis of crystalline materials. We explored the solid-state interconversion between the coordination compounds and tetrachlorocuprates derived from copper(II) chloride and different aromatic amines (4- aminobenzonitrile, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 4- nitroaniline, 4-aminopyridine and 4-aminoacetophenone) via gas-solid reaction. The tetrachlorocuprates were converted into the corresponding coordination compounds by exposing them to gaseous triethylamine (TEA), while the coordination compounds were transformed into the corresponding tetrachlorocuprates by reaction with hydrogen chloride gas. The mechanochemical and solid-state experiments were accompanied by solution synthesis and crystallisation experiments in order to obtain single crystals. The crystal and molecular structure of the prepared compounds was explored by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and correlated with their thermal properties and reactivity in the solid state.
