Does type of organizational structures affect organizational performances? Case study of Croatia

Organizational structure is usually observed as a development of formal system of tasks and reporting relationships between management, employees and companies departments within an organization, with the main purpose to perform organizational goals more efficiently. Main, well known types of organizational structures, which could be used in Croatian companies are: functional structure, divisional structure, matrix structure, process structure and network organizational structures. Basic type of organizational structure, functional structure is more common in small and young, less developed companies, and we supposed, according to the theoretical background that companies development should be accompanied with the more developed type of organizational structures. The aim of this paper is to provide the evidence of interdependencies between types of organizational structures and their effects on organizational performances such as revenue, profits, and net profit margin as well. Our survey has been divided in two phases, fist we investigated types of organizational structures, companies’ tradition, average number of employees, industry where companies belong to etc. This part of survey has been conducted on the population of 500 companies with the highest value added rank in the Republic of Croatia in the year 2009 (according to the Institute for Business Intelligence). Analyzed companies are Croatian companies with the highest added ranking in that year. In the next step we investigated organizational performance (period 2007 – 2011) listed in public resources. Previous researches leaded us to the presumption that distribution of organizational structures might be deviated from uniform distribution with the higher proportion of functional organizational structure in population. Furthermore, in this research will also reveal distribution of organizational structures types in Croatian companies in 21st century, and interdependencies between the organizational structures type and industry which companies belong to. We conduct this research with the assumption that we can prove causality between type of organizational structures and companies’ efficiency in terms of organizational performances achieved by observed companies in last five years.
