In the regular personal dosimetry of individuals professionally exposed to ionizing radiation, passive dosimeters such as film or thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) are widely used. However, passive dosimeters can provide information only on the total accumulated dose equivalent, and not on the exposure dose rates or the actual moment and duration of an exposure. The active electronic personal dosimeter ALARA OD was used to quantify dose and dose rate levels of the exposure of interventional radiologists and urologists to scattered X-ray radiation from patients while performing procedures in interventional radiology and urology. Fluoroscopy-guided procedures in interventional urology utilise the same radiological equipment as in interventional radiology. Time-dependent dose and dose rate data measured by an AEPD worn by an urologist have revealed that exposures in interventional urology were usually shorter (up to a few seconds) and with lower maximum dose rates (up to 200 μSv/h) compared to those in interventional radiology. We have also obtained a new type of data – a characteristic pattern of dose rate versus time for any single radiological intervention – which has not been reported in the relevant literature so far. The use of an AEPD in interventional procedures has enabled selective retrospective dosimetry - a feature that not all passive dosimeters can provide.
