Cultural Heritage Management-Challanges for Tourism

Recent debates on the significance of cultural resources for the development of tourism deal with the relationship between destination management and utilization of resources on which this development is based. The most prominent standpoint is that a compromise is needed between the conservation of cultural heritage and development issues. This revival of interest in the role of heritage in economic development is a result of global trends towards the convergence of cultural and economic development. In this context, an ever rising interest has been given to the role of tourism as an economic activity that helps turning cultural heritage into assets. Related to these issues, this paper is aimed to raise the following questions: Is tourism able to reconcile many of the confronted interests between cultural heritage management and economic development, i.e. interests associated with the property rights, urban infrastructure, conservation of cultural heritage and the carrying capacities of the space? Have the researchers managed to integrate complex issues associated with the utilization of cultural resources in tourism industry with their conservation? Yet, the last but not the least of the objectives of this paper is to enlighten the myth of cultural tourism as a universally applicable strategy for a local community development. Eventually the main purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of active public cultural and tourism policies in the context of destination management with the aim of achieving sustainability. Additionally the key ideas presented in the paper will be shortly discussed through a specific case study.
