Bitumen modified with reactive polymers
The aim of this paper was to study the effect of the addition of two types of reactive terpolymers on the bitumen rheology. Eight polymer-modified bitumens (PMBs) were produced by mixing two types of bitumens with two types of reactive polymers, ethylene – butylacrylate – glycidylmethacrylate Elvaloy AM and Elvaloy 4170 terpolymers, using polymer contents of 1.6 and 1.9 wt.%. The difference between these polymers is in the percentage of reactive functional group, glycidylmethacrylate, GMA, which contributes to better reactivity with the asphaltenes in bitumen. The results of the investigation indicate that the modification with reactive polymers contributes to good storage stability because of the formation of a chemical bond between the polymer and bitumen. But, when bitumen is modified with such a reactive polymer, the polymer amount has to be chosen carefully since an excessive quantity can cause the formation of an insoluble bitumen gel. The rheological properties of road bitumen were improved by means of reactive polymer modification as proven by conventional tests, the rheological parameters G*, *, , and resistance to permanent deformation, i.e. rutting.
