Chloromethyl Cations in Cryogenic SbF5 Matrices and the Generation of Carbocations from Hydrocarbons

Chloromethyl cation were prepared in cryogenic antimony pentafluoride matrices from carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and methylene chloride. The trichloromethyl cation has been shown to be an excellent reagent for the generation of carbocations from corresponding hydrocarbons in the SbF5 matrix.
