Congruence and structural complexity – Testing the relationship in large companies
The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of the relationship between organizational congruence and organizational complexity characteristics. Although relevant literature generally assumes that organizational congruence will decline as organization becomes more and more complex, the research conducted in this paper has shown that this relationship in not uniform and that it varies according to organization's components and their alignments (in pairs) and to the dimensions of its structural complexity. Namely, research conducted on the sample of 104 large companies has shown that organization’s vertical complexity, oppose to its horizontal complexity, is positively connected with organization's overall congruence, while the strategy's and technology's alignments are groups of alignments which are the most resistant to organization's structural complexity changes.
