The Romanization of the Histri in the early Roman period
In his text on some characteristics of the histrian onomastics (Histria Historica, 4/2, Pula 1981, 67-74 ; reprinted in: «Iliri i antički svijet», Split 1989, 729-735) Professor Duje Rendić Miočević had (again) reopened the question of the ethnic and cultural identity of the ancient Histri. Al- though the onomastic evidence was the backbone of his text, there are also other remains of the histrian tradition in the Early Empire. Very important among them are theonyms of indigenous deities, but also the unclear problem of the relationship between the Histri and the Romans in the colonial agri of Pola and Parentium, as well as the question of the ethnic border between the Histri and the Liburni in Eastern Istria. The paper will deal with these three components of the problem as a contribution to the discussion of the romanization of ancient Istria.
