The Formation of Croatian Terms for EU Legal Concepts

Although the examples are drawn from the author’s work in Croatia over the past 13 years, the purpose of this presentation is to identify basic principles of EU term formation that apply to all candidate countries. Attention is focused on the decision-making process of translators and terminologists when creating terms in the national language to designate EU legal concepts, in particular the linguistic and legal criteria used to favour one term over another. The goal is to create a transparent, precise and coherent vocabulary of EU terms that will be easily distinguished from terms of national law but will also fit into the context of national law. For best results, a multilingual approach is recommended.
