Legal Translation and Multilingualism in the European Union
This presentation introduces Chinese professors and students of legal translation to some basic principles of EU law, explains the policy of EU multilingualism and the role of translation in EU multilingual lawmaking. Special emphasis is placed on problems of translating the EU acquis and the formation of EU terminology in candidate countries such as Croatia. Using examples from 12 EU official languages, the author illustrates how terminologists attempt to harmonize terminology across EU languages by using internationalisms and creating various types of neologisms, which are translatable into all languages and can be easily distinguished from national terms of the legal systems of the Member States.
