Patient satisfaction with arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstruction – traumatic versus degenerative rotator cuff tears

Aims The study compares patient satisfacton and shoulder function in everyday life after rotator cuff reconstruction in patient with traumatic and degenerative rotator cuff tears. Materials and Methods Thirty patients with traumatic and thirty patient with degenerative rotator cuff tears were opereted on with arthroscopic reconstruction procedure. Patient satisfaction with shoulder function was evaluated employing Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) and Dissability Arm Shoulder Score (DASH) prior surgery and six months after surgery. Results In boh groups there were better DASH and OSS results six months after sugrery comparing with preoperative evaluation. In traumatic rotator cuff tears DASH preoperatively was 53, 9±20, 1 (0-70) and postoperatively 3, 9±11 (0-45). In this group OSS was 15, 2±8, 5 (6-39) preoperatively and 40, 1±11, 4 (17-38) six months after operation. In degenerative rotator cuff tears tears DASH preoperatively was 46, 9±10, 5 (18-55) and postoperatively 9, 7±14 (0-42). In this group OSS was 22, 8±4 (17-32) preoperatively and 39, 6±10, 1 (19-48) six months after operation. All differences were statisticaly significant. Also, there was statisticaly significant difference between OSS in tramatic and degenerative tears prior surgery (p=0, 012) and in DASH prior surgery between these groups (p=0, 0008), but this statisticaly significant diference does not exists six months after surgery in niether group. Conclusions All patients were satisfied with arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstruction in both traumatic or degenerative groups of rotator cuff tears. Subjective disfunction in patients with traumatic rotator cuff tear prior surgery is significantly higher than in degenerative tears, so these patients are relatively more satisfied with arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstruction.
