The history of the eastern Adriatic region from the Vth to the VIIth centuries AD: historical processes and historiographic problems
This paper considers the main historical processes and historiographic problems related to the history of the eastern Adriatic region from the early 5th to the early 7th centuries. It surveys the state of the research, examines the chief literary sources, and presents and discusses selected research problems. It is also intended to provide a relevant, up-to-date insight into the principal historiographic results, and open new research perspectives. It offers an historian's outlook, but contends that, given the scarcity, inconclusiveness and fragmentary nature of literary sources, the elucidation of many different aspects of the late antique and/or early medieval history of the eastern Adriatic region lies with archaeology.
Eastern Adriatic; the 5th-early 7th c.; historical processes; historiographic problems
The paper was finalized within the frame of the NEWFELPRO project entitled The Justinianic Age in Dalmatia and Southern Pannonia (JUSTINIANDALMPAN), Grant Agreement Nr. 60, carried out by Hrvoje Gračanin.
