Analysis of aggregate concentration in Republic of Croatia
Due to their strength large companies may have significant political influence which enables them to lobby for certain legal acts and affect economic categories such as total sales, assets and employment. Since in Croatia an extreme capital accumulation has occurred and most entrepreneurs operate with the biggest companies as their suppliers, this paper aims to explore the level of economic activity controlled by the largest companies. Due to data availability the authors provide an empirical analysis of aggregate concentration for the period 2005-2010. Despite the relatively short period of time used in the analysis, the results strongly suggest that aggregate concentration, expressed either in terms of total assets or number of employees, shows a declining trend. Additionally, measures of aggregate concentration calculated on the same basis (number of employees or total assets of companies) are highly correlated and could be used interchangeably.
Aggregate concentration; Total assets; Number of employees
