Eastern Adriatic seafarers and trade routes in the reflection of Eastern Mediterranean glass vessels found in ancient Liburnia

Several maritime routes were important during the ancient times, but the emphasis in this article is placed on the eastern maritime route which enabled communication and trade among the numerous Eastern provinces and the larger Northern Adriatic centres. Furthermore, the Eastern Mediterranean 1st and 2nd century glass vessels found in the territory of Liburnia and the liquid contents transported in them are crucial topics which must be considered in this context. Such glass vessels attest to the vivid and expanding circum- Mediterranean trade where ancient Liburnia, with its ports, became a prominent centre, but they also attest to the implementation of Eastern Mediterranean culture into the lives of Liburnian population, which is accordingly validated by the archaeological contexts of these finds. Considering the aforementioned factors it is important to emphasize to what extent the territory of Liburnia fits into the broader context of the ancient glass trade and production. Keeping in mind that great quantity of such material was found in Iader, a question of importance of that settlement during the Roman period and its connection with trade centres on the Eastern Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts is considered as well.
