Cadmium and zinc status in maize hybrids under acid soil conditions
Twenty maize hybrids were grown on powder clay stagnosol (pH in 1N KCl: 4.77) in two growing seasons. Mean concentrations of cadmium in maize leaves were 0.14 ppm Cd. Low Cd was found in six hybrids (OsSK373, OsSK234, Bc278, OsSK2- 191, OsSK382 and Clarica: mean 0.09 mg kg-1), while in three hybrids it was considerably higher (OsSK395, OsSK378 and Tvrtko 303: mean 0.200 mg kg-1). Mean concentrations of zinc in maize leaves were higher (25.6 mg kg-1) under drought of 2000 compared to moist conditions of 2001 (19.4 mg kg-1). Also, differences among the hybrids were from 16.6 to 30.0 mg Zn kg-1. Five hybrids characterizing the lower leaf-Zn (OsSK333, OsSK395, OsSK382, OsSK247 and RK 1456: mean 18.1 mg Zn kg-1), while it was considerably higher in the hybrids OsSK298, OsSK378, OsSK321, OsSK277 and Clarica (mean 27.7 mg Zn kg-1). In general, low connection was found between Cd and Zn concentrations in maize.
