Overview of severe weather events during SOP1 in Croatia
Special Observing Period 1 (SOP1) of the HYdrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment - HyMeX project was performed from September - November 2012. Observed and NWP data from France, Spain, Italy and Croatia were collected operationally during the SOP1. Furthermore, 23 Intensive Observation Periods (IOPs) were organized over France, Spain and Italy (including the Italian side of Adriatic Sea) and used to gather unique observational data. During SOP1, 16 IOPs were dedicated to HPE over France, Spain and Italy and many of these events affected the eastern Adriatic Sea and Croatia. The overview of the severe weather in Croatia during SOP1 is given. Many of the IOPs in HyMeX target zone had strong connections with severe weather over the Adriatic Sea. For these reasons, several heavy rainfall events as well as episodes of severe winds (Bura and Jugo) in Croatia were a follow-up of severe weather associated with IOPs in the western Mediterranean and Italy. These events of significant weather over the Adriatic and Croatia are briefly described, with a special attention to IOP2 and IOP16 in these regions. Finally, the potentials for using additionally measured and collected data during the HyMeX experiment for data targeting of weather in Croatia is discussed.
