A microprocessor controlled gnathodynamometer
Measurement of human bite force has been performed with different types of equipment that resulted in great variations of the obtained results. In this study, a microcontroller based bite force measurement system (electronic gnathodynamometer) is described. A strain gauge force transducer, used as a sensory unit, is built into a housing of nonhardened stainless steal. The construction of the housing ensured physiological position of the jaws during biting. The sensor was connected to the electronic measurement system which enabled measurement of maximal bite force, masticatory muscle endurance time (duration of the force signal higher than 75% and 50% the maximal bite force) as well as storage of the recorded waveshape of up to 16 bite cycles for further off-line processing.
