Antimicrobial treatment of chlamydial urogenital infections
Chlamydia trachomatis shows good in vitro susceptibility to doxycycline, erythromycin, azithromycin, rifampicin, ofloxacin and clindamycin. The treatment of chlamydial urethritis/cervicitis is conducted according to World Health Organization guidelines: doxycycline 2x100 mg/7 days, ofloxacin 2x300 mg or 1x400 mg/7 days, erythromycin 2x500 mg/14 days or 500 mg/10 days, and azithromycin. Azithromycin administered once in a dose of 1 g has many advantages, excellent therapeutic effect, simple use and minor side effects. A special attention should be paid to the treatemnt of asymptomatic chlamydial infections, chlamydial chronic prostatitis and urogenital chlamydial infections in persons with prolonged infection symptoms. According to conducted reasearch to date, such types of chlamydial infections should be treated for a longer period of time, with total higher doses of either azithromycin or doxycycline.
