Basal psychophysiology and psychophysiological responses in PTSD patients and healthy controls
Aim/objectives: Numerous studies showed differences in psychophysiological responses between patients diagnosed with PTSD compared with healthy individuals (1, 2, 3). This study aims at examining basal psychophysiology and psychophysiological responses after acoustic startle probe in two groups of PTSD patients (war related trauma and civil trauma) and healthy controls. Methods: Heart-rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), skin conductance (SC), eye blink muscle contraction and respiration were measured during baseline period and during the presentation of startle stimuli. The study will include 35 participants in each of three groups. Results: A statistical analysis was done for 18 participants in each of the groups so far. These results have pointed to deficits in startle habituation and elevated basal HR in both groups of PTSD patients compared to healthy controls. Conclusions: Results that we have so far are in accordance with previous studies as well as with our own work.
