Models of dairy farms in Croatian family farm renewal

During the process of renewal and development of Croatian territory devastated by recent war, former dairy farms have been renewed and some new were built within family farms. Great number of farms is placed in distinctly rural areas where there are no considerable milk producers, and from organizational and economic aspect, problem for those farms are insufficiently developed market institutions. Also, those farms have no considerable own financial means, so in the process of reconstruction they have to be oriented on humanitarian aid or credit funds. In devastated, continental part of Croatia, several basic models of renewal and development of cattle production were projected. Criteria for them were socio-economic characteristics of agricultural resources of the selected family farms as well These models are based on relatively small investments, satisfying economic efficiency and favorable level of labor and other farm resources' utilization. Considering the great importance of rural areas in Croatia in developing the model of sustainable agriculture, we consider the possibilities for several types of farms business due to principles and standards of sustainable agriculture. We also investigated some economic advantages and disadvantages in fitting the sustainable agricultural concept into the system of conventional agriculture in family farm cattle production in rural areas of Croatia.
