Evaluation of students with special needs in science teaching
In the Republic of Croatia students with special needs are integrated into the regular educational system. These students are in need of an individual approach, their process of learning and the evaluation of their accomplishments should be adapted accordingly. It is necessary to base the evaluation of the teaching process on an elaborate system of monitoring, testing and assessing. This research describes the modes and approaches in the evaluation of students with special needs. The aim of the research was to determine modes, strategies, elements and activities of the evaluation and assessment of students with special needs in Science teaching. We analyzed the teachers’ evaluation of students with special needs in Science teaching and the research has shown that the teachers’ approach to students with special needs is not sufficiently individualized. Similarly insufficient is their use of an adequate strategy appropriate for the students’ capabilities and affinities. The results indicate the need of primary school teachers for additional professional training in the field of evaluation and assessment of students with special needs that would enable them to consider the students’ individual needs to a higher degree.
