3D Surface Models and Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Female Feet
The thesis encourages a multidisciplinary research and collaboration across the areas of anthropometry, functional morphologists as well as apparel and footwear industry in order to provide information about the foot morphology of the sample, but also to enlighten foot disorders and deformities caused by fashionable and restrictive footwear. The sample of the foot shape of adult women was collected using contemporary methods and analysed by two parallel statistical analyses. The conventional measurements were converted into the language of shape, where the two data sets, analyzed by protocols that are remarkably different in both their geometry and their algebra, nevertheless result in one common biometrical summary: wearing high heels cause foot deformations inasmuch as it leads to the need for orthotic devices to treat the consequently flattened foot arch. Footprint shapes are affected by lifestyle factors and Geometric morphometrics proved to be a powerful tool for the extraction and description of those effects.
