Body, Brain, and Beauty : The Place of Aesthetics in the World of the Mind

The lesson from reductionism drives us to the conclusion that what is missing in the modern philosophy of mind and brain research is a big picture of the mind, and also a more integrated conception of the brain. The ‘big picture, ’ however, is not complete without taking into accountone of ‘the most complex reflexes of the human mind’ ; the aesthetic is thus to be taken as an integral dimension of the human mind, and the importance of beauty should be studied within the study of mind and consciousness as one studies perception, memory, and behavior. Also, realizing that the brain is as much a product of culture as it is the outcome of biology, that is, that its evolution is not dictated by Darwinian principles alone, but is also shaped by cultural development, unavoidably leads to recognition of the importance of aesthetic qualities.
