CULTIVATION AND TRANSFORMATION OF JUDGMENT IN THE ENCOUNTER OF PHILOSOPHY, CULTURE, AND ART, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF KANT AND HEGEL BILATERAL AUSTRIAN-CROATIAN RESEARCH PROJECT UNDER THE „AUSSCHREIBUNG EINER WISSENSCHAFTLICH- TECHNISCHEN ZUSAMMENARBEIT VON ÖSTERREICH UND KROATIEN“

In this research collaboration, directed by Prof. Violetta Waibel, Institute of Philosophy, University of Vienna, and Prof. Marie-Élise Zovko, Institute of Philosophy, Zagreb, the philosophical, cultural and moral relevance of cultivation of judgment will be explored with particular reference to the philosophy of Kant and Hegel. Members of the research team will examine Kant's and Hegel's arguments regarding the role of imagination in the formation of judgment and the role of judgment in knowledge, morality and culture. The research topic investigates how practical rationality, rooted in structures of motivation, and conditioned by cultural factors, is stimulated, uplifted, inspired and ennobled by encounters with "higher" preoccupations of the human spirit: arts, literature, philosophy, humanities, and how knowledge of nature and rational discourse depend upon and are completed by the capacity for higher-level reflection which belongs to the power of reason and "reflective judgment" in Kant and to what is called "speculative thought" in Hegel. In consideration of pressing issues confronting humanity with regard to their place and role in the natural world, in history and society, the research team will explore, how, on the one hand, sensitivity for moral issues and ideals is intimately tied to our natural being as expressed in emotions, desires, imagination, and the pool of (individual and collective) memories and beliefs which build upon them ; and how, on the other, cultivation and transformation of moral judgment depends on higher-level reflection on universal values which "take flesh" in literature, culture and works of art, as interpreted by the humanities and illuminated by philosophical reflection. They will show how Kant and Hegel provide us with the verbal, conceptual and argumentative apparatus required to adequately explore this constellation of issues and their significance today. Research on the role of philosophy, humanities, and the arts in formation of attitudes and habits of judgment based on universal human values is rooted in insights first developed in the philosophical systems of Kant and Hegel, insights which become clearer when the two systems are explored in light of one another. By considering the indispensable role of philosophy, the humanities and the arts in formation of judgment, the project exemplifies a new and innovative branch of research, vital to the aim of promoting values of global community within a European context and the value of European thought and culture within the global community. In four meetings, one meeting per annum in Zagreb and one in Vienna in 2014 and 2015, members of the research team will meet to present and discuss their research findings, and to prepare joint publication of their work in the form of an anthology with the working title Cultivation and Transformation of Judgment in the Encounter of Philosophy, Culture, and Art: Nature and Intellect in Kant and Hegel. The Vienna meetings will be timed to coincide with the International Hegel Congress 2014 and the International Kant Congress 2015, in order to take advantage of the opportunity to compare the group's research findings with relevant research presented at each of the conferences. During their visits to Vienna, participants from Zagreb will also take advantage of the rich holdings of the University of Vienna library to further their research on the project topic. The meetings at the Institute of Philosophy in Zagreb will concentrate on focused exchange of ideas and findings of the individual participants on the project topic, including sustained discourse on relevant contemporary work presented at the two congresses on Hegel and Kant. The team will also present their findings to a larger audience of interested researchers from Croatia, as a means of promoting and disseminating the findings of their bilateral Austro-Croatian research cooperation. Part of each visit will be devoted to planning for further development of the research project as bi- and/or multilateral research cooperation and exchange under the new European grant program NEWFELPRO and other suitable research funding programs, especially those aimed at promoting cooperation and exchange between Austria and its Middle and Southeast European neighbours.
