Polyethylene bags - from cradle to grave
Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used plastic materials, mainly for packaging purposes. One of the most common packaging made of polyethylene is single-use carrier or shopping bag. The polyethylene bag has been popular because of its extraordinary strength and its lightweight properties, and because of that is regarded as essential as a mean for carrying items across the world. The majority of plastic bags in circulation are high density polyethylene (HDPE) bags with handles, commonly used once only for a short period of time, such as to transport groceries from the shop to the home. In recent years, the single-use carrier polyethylene bags have become a very hot topic. Plastic bags are often dominating environmental headlines and a number of political initiatives have been taken, involving proposals to impose a levy or ban on plastic shopping bags in Europe. The paper will present the overview of polyethylene bag life cycle, from natural gas processing to its disposal.
