Impacts of liming on grain yield, nutritional status and quality of wheat

Acid soils that limit crop production are found throughout the world. Acidity in the surface soil can be corrected through liming. Aim of this study was testing the subsequently effects of liming with the hydratized lime (autumn 2007: 0, 5 and 20 t ha-1) on grain yield, nutritional status and quality of wheat (the growing season 2010/2011). The experiment was conducted under field conditions in four replicates. The growing season 2010/2011 was favorable for wheat growing. Precipitation in October-June period was for 13% lower, air- temperature was for 1.7 °C higher than usual, while winter was mild (Dec.-Feb. in Osijek 0.7oC ; the long-term average 1961-1990: 0.4oC) in accordance with the trend of the global climatic changes. Climatic the coldest January (-1.2 oC) was in 2012 the warmer for 2.3 °C. In spite of favorable weather conditions, grain yield of wheat on the control was low (4.29 t ha-1) because of acid soil limitations. However, as affected by liming, grain yields were increased for 43% (5 t ha-1) and 64% (20 t ha-1). Also, grain P and Mg status were increased by liming up to 48% and 13%, while grain Zn was decreased up to 20% (mg kg-1 in dry matter: 2323 and 3436 P, 919 and 1039 Mg, 37.3 and 30.1 Zn, for the control and 20 t ha-1 lime, respectively). However, the concentrations of K, Fe and Mn in wheat grain were practically independent on liming (averages in mg kg-1: 3674 K, 39.9 Fe and 51.7 Mn). Also, grain quality parameters were similar for the applied treatments (average contents: 14.1% protein, 66.8% starch, 37.5% wet gluten and sedimentation 58.9 ml). Maize as the previous crop in the experiment responded to liming by yield increases up to 32%, 51% and 18%, for 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively.
