Vestivular migraine-a recognized clinical entity
Migraine headaches and vestibular vertigo concur in the general population about 3 time more often than can be expected to be a coincidence. Population studies show that the prevalence of dizziness in the general population is over 20%and the lifetime prevalence of vertigo is 7%. One study has revealed that 3.2%of the general population has both vestibular vertigo and migraine. In that study, 1% of the population was diagnosed as having vestibular migraine(VM). VM was recently regognizes as a distinct clinical entyty and the diagnostic criteria will appear in an appendix of the 3rd edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD).Preventive antimigraine therapy is often useful in such patients ; however, randomized double-blind studies are needed.
