Public Games in Rome
Public games have been organized throughout the history of the human race. Public games were organized in Rome of Romulus and Tarquin, as well as in private villas and dwellings of slaves and gladiators. The prosperity of the games was supported by Roman nobles and magistrates. Major public games were organized at the expense of the state of Rome, paid by the rich members of imperial and patrician families. What were the public games in Rome? Educated Romans considered the munera gladiatorum as offerings to the gods, they were used as schools of character, for studying the skills of foreigners, but also as a place for capital punishment. Every gladiator had a chance to survive, derived from their valour, courage, fervour and martial qualities. For gladiators, every fight was a moment of a life or death reality. Romans, citizens and soldiers at the same time, in confronting this reality, asked not for war games to be played in the arena, but a real war in which real blood is spilled. This way of life, but also of thinking and attitude to life, was transferred to the circus and horse races.
