Dimensional analysis as a useful tool in determining the relationship between sorption phenomena and the solid/liquid ratio

The performance of zinc removal on natural zeolite has been evaluated relative to the solid/liquid (S/L) ratio in the range from 2, 5 to 120 g/l at the constant initial zinc concentration of 3, 334 mmol/l. Dimensional analysis was applied to the Freundlich isotherm in order to establish the relationship between sorption of zinc on natural zeolite and the S/L ratio. With the assumption that the total amount of zinc removed on zeolite is a function of equilibrium concentration, solution volume and zeolite amount, the Freundlich isotherm has been converted into the Power- function Freundlich-like Model (PFM). The equilibrium experimental results have been fitted to the PFM model, and the parameters of the model have been determined. In order to test the validity of dimensional analysis, a set of experimental data obtained at a certain solid- liquid ratio were also fitted to the PFM model and Freundlich isotherms. The results show excellent fitting to the PFM model, while the fit to the Freundlich isotherm failed. This indicates that the PMF model is suitable for description of the equilibrium in solid/liquid sorption system independently of the S/L ratio and initial concentration.
