Shedding of Salmonella Enteritidis from infected hens
Salmonella enterica serovar Entertitidis (SE) is one of the main causes of food borne diseases, transmitted by eggs or egg products. Egg contamination by SE is the result of both horizontal and vertical SE transmission. In the two trials two lines of commercial laying hens at onset of the lay were orally inoculated with a single dose of 1.2x109 CFU of highly pathogenic SE. Laid eggs were collected during the 40 days post-inoculation and examined for the presence of SE on egg shells and in egg contents, by both-standard ISO method and realtime PCR. Positive eggs were laid only in narrow period of time, and in low numbers (3.0% and 0.4% respectively), showing high concordance with literature data and previous conducted studies of salmonella-contamination in salmonella-positive laying flocks.
