Lead poisoning and renal function : Relationship with trace elements and immune response
The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between chronic, recurrent lead poisoning, kidney function, blood pressure, anaemia, immunological parameters and interaction with trace elements. The results showed that chronic lead poisoning, due to increased lead body burden, can cause an impairment of renal function with a concomitant suppression of cellular immunity and stimulation of humoral immunity. These findings suggest the possible role of the immune system in the nephrotoxic effects of lead. Hypertension was not directly associated with chronic lead poisoning, duration of lead exposure or biological exposure indices. However, our results showed an important role of trace elements in haematological and immunological changes in chronic lead poisoning.
