English Slang and Colloquialisms in the Context of Reading Comprehension
Assuming that slang and colloquialisms are not generally taught in English as a foreign language classes, this research was aimed at gaining insight into university students’ knowledge and perceived use of slang expressions and colloquialisms in British and American English in the context of reading comprehension. The research further attempted to obtain data on the possible differences in the participants’ exposure to the two varieties (BE and AE). The results indicated that the participants were more familiar with American than British slang and colloquialisms. Also, their scores were significantly higher on the reading comprehension test (cloze and summary) as well as on the test evaluating their knowledge and perceived use of slang expressions and colloquialisms in American English.
