Corpus lexicography in languages for specific purposes - creating a minimum vocabulary
This chapter deals with the methodology of preparing minimum LSP vocabularies (in this case, vocabulary of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and Codes of Practice A–H – PACE) by a corpus-based approach. In addition to word lists containing statistical data, the most important lexicographical tool in exploiting corpora are concordances, which reveal grammatical and semantic features and provide insight into individual lexical items and their immediate linguistic environment, thus making it possible to establish specific register characteristics. In the case of bilingual lexicography, they reveal lexical complexity as well as register relevant senses of lexical units, appropriate equivalents, and elements of pragmatic use by identifying significant collocations.
