Bilbo Baggins as a Hero
The thesis focuses on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and its protagonist. Bilbo Baggins is analyzed as a hero of children’s literature in reference to theoretical insights into different hero types and typical characteristics of protagonists of children’s literature in general, as well as of high fantasy and adventure literature in particular. It is concluded that Bilbo lacks the physical superiority of a typical hero, but he shows intellectual superiority to his adversaries. Thus, his character can be considered heroic, especially as he possesses characteristics specified by Maria Nikolajeva as defining for a hero of children’s literature, by Joseph Cambell for a mythical hero, and by Berislav Majhut for a hero typical for children’s adventure novels.
