Developing pupils' speaking skills in ELT

The main focus of the thesis is on describing the teaching approaches and methods in this field of foreign language learning. The paper deals with the process of learning the spoken language and puts emphasis on language itself as well as its rules and structures. Understanding meaning is a crucial point of learning a foreign language and being able to speak it fluently and without any obstacles. The paper puts particular emphasis focus on learners, as the ones who are important and who will be using the language they are learning. Through examples and real life situations, the paper analyses the difference between speaking skills and other language skills. Speaking is the active use of language to express meaning, so that others can understand and make sense of it. This is why understanding meaning is the most important factor of developing a skillful/proficient language speaker. If the meaning is lost through the process of learning, pupils will not be able to develop their speaking skills and will not be qualified for a proper communication and interaction with the others. This thesis provides real life examples, as well as advice in developing young learners' discourse and communicative skills. It is of great importance that the students have the right teacher to look up to and follow to help them speak the foreign language they have chosen.
