Mother tongue avoidance strategies in teaching English to young learners
This graduation thesis looks into the child as a language learner, paying particular attention to the foreign language situation, in which the children have already acquired the basics of their first language. Also, most EFL teachers in Europe, including Croatia, are non-native speakers of English, who are required to invest their expertise in order to provide a classroom situation which will be as close as possible to the natural, everyday use of the language. That is why the thesis deals with mother tongue avoidance strategies in teaching English to young learners. The main emphasis is on the ways the use of L1 can be reduced in the classroom. If the students want to learn the language, they have to hear it and be exposed to it as much and as possible. At the same time, this means that teachers should use it more than they do. The thesis presents various strategies that can help in stopping the overuse of the mother tongue.
