Trends in early second/foreign language research
The main topic of this thesis is early language education and the recognition of appropriate methods and approaches in the process of creating quality education. Language as a means of communication stands as one of the most important components of succesful education, both as first language or second/foreign language. The mother tongue represents the basic language we acquire and all the others languages play an increasingly significant role in the worldwide society. That is why this thesis provides definitions of terms such as mother tongue/first language, second/foreign language, language acquisition and language learning.Since the focus of this thesis is on primary education, the role of cognitive development is being considered, as an important factor influencing the way we teach. Significant Croatian TEFL projects are also mentioned. This thesis serves as a review of literature written on the topic of early second/foreign language acquisition and learning. The main intention is to collect a variety of information and to compare what is done through foreign language research in Croatia and abroad. The research results can serve as a basis for improving the quality of teaching English as a foreign language in primary school.
