Textbook activities promoting pupils' thinking skills
This thesis is divided in two main parts. The first part points out the main characteristics of becoming a competent teacher in primary education, whereas the second part analyzes four units from English textbooks for young learners by English and Croatian authors. After analyzing seven different models of teaching teacher’s characteristics and teaching strategies are emphasized. The second part of the thesis describes the importance of developing thinking and intelligence and the interconnection between the two of them. The third part of the thesis deals with developing creative thinking influenced by the creative climate and creative process in the classroom. Also, the importance of developing critical thinking is pointed out in this part of the paper. Finally, the last part of the paper deals with the analysis of four different units from four different textbooks. two of them by English authors and two are written for first and second graders by Croatian authors. All four analyzed units are presented in the form of a lesson plan which consists of introduction, new material development, practice and closure. Regardless of the differences between the authors and styles of writing the main goal was to organize the presented lesson with the same structure using activities appropriate for the pupils.
