Active Learning, TIMSS-PIRLS Connection And Attitudes
Understanding educational outcomes is central to effective educational planning and reform, especially in science, which has direct application to nearly all aspects of life and society. The alignment of the TIMSS and PIRLS results provide the opportunity for assessment of the same student population in reading, mathematics, and science competencies. The observed gap in Croatian results between science and particularly mathematics compared to reading skills revealed by TIMSS and PIRLS 2011 imply some interesting additional factors in play that will be discussed. Furthermore, background data obtained from surveys imply that although previous research suggested substantially improvement of student learning through active learning added to traditional science lectures, there are some key premises for its successful implementation in education.
