Chambers for testing of isolator rocks impermeability for carbon- dioxide accumulated into reservoir below seal
Appearance of non-hydrocarbons in hydrocarbon (HC) reservoirs is mostly negligible. However, some of reservoirs are recently project as subsurface volumes available for carbon-dioxide injection with two goals: (a) to increase oil recovery and (b) for permanent storage of CO2 as green-house gas. It is why is necessary re- define impermeability of cap rock of oil reservoir, which became or already is partially saturated with methane (CH4) and injected carbon-dioxide (CO2). Majority of HC reservoirs in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System (CPBS) is capped by marls. However petroleum molecules have larger diameter then gaseous CH4 and CO2, so such isolator rocks do not have sealing properties for vertical migration of gaseous. Present chamber is intended for testing isolating properties for CO2. It is composed from two parts, between which had been created pressure difference approximately similar with such difference between two Miocene sandstone layers in CPBS subsurface, separated by marl. Chamber simulates the base sandstone using sand, and marl using claystone.
