From contact linguistics to eurolinguistics : a survey
The survey of linguistic research in Europe presents a broad historiographic sketch ranging from “Early Contact Studies in the Past” via “Later Contact Studies” down to the “Rise of Eurolinguistic Studies Proper” ending with “Areal Linguistics” and Europe-wide Studies, which shows a long series of developmental stages of the novel branches in linguistics. The paper mentions the major linguists and works which have been of importance for the breakthrough of Eurolinguistics as a branch of linguistics in its own right. The three main pillars for the emergence of Eurolinguistics as a self-contained focus of research on language and European minorities are thus a combination of a tripartite series of factors such as language contact+conflict studies within a socioethnic and geographic-historical framework. Such a combined socioethnic and geographic-historical approach is the chief prerequisite for success in Eurolinguistic research, whereby the map of Europe has turned out to be an indispensible means of description for sketching the physical and cultural Europe-wide isoglosses criss-crossing the European continent.
flowcharts of contact and eurolinguistics, contact and conflict of languages, goals of eurolinguistics, trends towards the view of Europe as a linguistic area (Spachbund) and some causes of the spread of European similarities
