The Romance influence on standard Croatian and Croatian dialects
The paper discusses differences between standard languages and dialects focusing on openess and closure with respect to alloglotic influences. Communicative needs within multilingual speech communities in informal settings are taken into account as well as ideological concerns involved in the development of standard languages. A brief historical outline of language contacts along the east Adriatic coast involving Latin, Dalmatic, Venetian and Tuscan influences on local idioms is presented, as well as the processes of development of standard Croatian characterized by pronounced purism. Finally, differences between linguistic transference (Clyne 2003) in Croatian dialects and standard Croatian are discussed in terms of frequency, semantic fields and degrees of adaptation on the main linguistic levels. Characteristics and functions of code-switching between Croatian and Italian in local idioms are also presented, based on an extensive corpus of literary sources between the 16th and 20th century.
