Sažetak
In the last decade Campylobacter spp. (mainly C. jejuni and C. coli) have come to prominence as the leading cause of human bacterial enteritis throughout the world. About 1% of the population of Western Europe is infected each year. Campylobacteriosis is a zoonotic disease and the major source of infection is contaminated food (poultry meat) and water. Several Campylobacter virulence factors are described but the role in the development of the human disease has not been confirmed for each of them. The important role of outer membrane proteins, flagella, cytolethal distending toxin, capsule and lipooligosaccharide in the pathogenesis of Campylobacter jejuni mediated enteritis have been described. It is well known that humoral immunity of the host is crucial for the development of protection against Campylobacter disease. Nevertheless, experimental studies suggest that cellmediated immunity contributes to protection against C. jejuni infection. Viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state of campylobacters is presented and their unknown role in human infections is pointed. Epidemiological data, clinical simptoms and therapy of the disease are also described.
