Physiotherapy: yesterday, today, tomorrow

Introduction: Physiotherapy is a separate medical discipline essential to all age groups, geared towards improving the quality of life, recovery of disturbed functions of the body, maintaining and/or increasing the maximum movement of the body, when they are disturbed by injury, disease or the aging process. Beginnings of physiotherapy were in ancient times when physical activity paid enormous attention, and understand the importance of maintaining health "Mens sana in corpore sana", ie "a healthy mind in a healthy body". Discussion: In the Croatian territory, physiotherapy beginnings at the beginning of the last century, when in 1908th begins to work a private orthopedic Institute by Professor Bozidar Špišić in Palmoticeva Street in Zagreb, whose wife Ema Špišić was first trained physiotherapist. It was the first such institution in the southeastern part of Europe. The government 1916th established Orthopedic Hospital, which was moved to the Holy Spirit in 1921. Orthopedic Hospital abolished 1931. and became a general hospital with orthopedic department which has activity of physiotherapy. However, until the establishment of the first school for physiotherapists have past decades. After the Second World War 1947. established first medical school for physical therapy and X-ray, which changed its name to the High School of Physiotherapy after a few years. The first generation of trained physiotherapists ended in December in 1949. and Dr Budak, who founded the school, continued with systematic training once a month. Needs of modern society for greater education of physiotherapists are constantly growing and 1968. opened the first college for physical therapists. At the Medical Faculty in Rijeka the two year study of physiotherapy began in 1985. and since 1999/2000. introduced a three-year study. 2012./13. the Medical Faculty in Rijeka enabled the continuation of higher education of physiotherapists establishing a new graduate study of physiotherapy, in duration of two years and earning the title of mag. physiotherapy. Demographic data indicate a growing increase in chronic degenerative diseases due to sedately lifestyle (reduced physical activity, increased automation and computerization, increased the population of elders), which simultaneously increases the need for increasing specialized physiotherapy activities, which therapists should specialize in your immediate area operation: cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal and neurological directions. Also with regard to the specific characteristics of the newborns, infants and young children, special profile of physiotherapists recognize necessary further education in this direction. People with special needs, also wanted a specially trained physiotherapists (people with polio, autism, with orthotic), as well as athletes. Subspecialty physiotherapist is essential, as well as their ongoing education in the form of courses and schools, as well as an obligation to restore the license for their work. Further studies should be aimed at maintaining the required courses to professional, as well as basic knowledge in order to improve physiotherapeutic activity and consequently provide better assistance for the purpose of disease prevention, health maintenance and providing rehabilitation. Conclusion: in the future we should consider the need for the establishment of doctoral study of physiotherapy or if not possible, within the existing curriculum of doctoral studies suggest courses that will cover just further scientific advancement of physiotherapy. Prestigious journals in this field quoted in CC (eg, Manual therapy, which is a journal of musculoskeletal physiotherapist of UK) indicate increasing scientific activity within the physiotherapy profession, which we unfortunately still do not follow enough.
